Setup Sky SMTP with Outlook Print

This article contains step by step instructions for setting up Microsoft Outlook to use a Bigthinka "Free Sky SMTP" or "SMTP Anywhere" account to send emails. Especially for those on Sky Broadband having trouble sending mail, although this service does work for all ISPs.

Click here for more information and signup for the "SMTP Anywhere" or "FREE Sky SMTP" account.

First for maximum deliverability you should set an SPF record  in your domain DNS providers console if possible.

Select Tools-> E-mail Accounts from the main menu at the top of outlook

From the email accounts page select the "View or change existing e-mail accounts" option and click "next"

Select the email account you would like to use SMTP with and click "Change" button

On the internet E-mail settings page enter the Sky SMTP server in the Outgoing mail server(SMTP) field as supplied to you on account signup.e.g. skysmtp.bigthinka.net

Then click the "More Settings" button

Select the "Outgoing Server" tab

Tick the "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication tick box

Select the "Log on using" option and enter the username and password as provided upon account sign up. eg [email protected]

Ensure the Remember password option is ticked

"Log on using secure password" and "Log on to incoming mail server before sending mail should" NOT be ticked.

Advanced Settings

Now select Advanced tab

Change the "Outgoing SMTP port" to that sent in your account creation email. e.g. 6000

Ensure "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" is not ticked.

Click "Ok" button to return to the Email Settings page saving your changes

Then click "Next" to be returned to the Email Accounts List.

Should you have more than one email account to update to use Sky SMTP select it and repeat the procedure.

Once all your email accounts have been altered click "Finish"

Outlook is now configured to send emails using your Bigthinka SMTP account.

A note about firewalls

When you first try to send an email you may receive a warning from your firewall application. This is because our SMTP accounts do not run on standard port 25 but on special ports 6000 or 26 this is because most ISP's only allow connections to their own SMTP servers on port 25 in an attempt to force you to use only their SMTP servers.
